FEBRUARY

(Issue 2 – 2010)

We welcome you to our `Newsletter' and pray you find a blessing through its pages.

LENT

When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptised by John,

He did not come for pardon, but as the Father’s Son.

He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins,

to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins.

Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make;

this very day invade us, and every bondage break.

Come, give our lives direction, the gift we covert most;

to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost.

F. Pratt Green

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you”.

`With God things don’t just `happen’—everything by God is planned. We can have a fear of the unknown as we go forward in 2010, but God cares about every detail of our lives and it brings to mind Abraham who was called to leave his country, his people and his father’s household. When God calls Abraham there’s a choice to be made. Abraham can either do what God asks and take a step of faith into the unknown, or he can ignore God’s call and stay put in familiar surroundings. “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.” (Hebrews 11: 8).   Abraham fully obeyed the call of God. He had faith for the unknown—just what we need when we sense the call of God to follow and serve Him in new ways. We can be anxious about what is coming next and so be afraid to step out in faith.  Change causes us to come face to face with the fear of the unknown. What a comfort to know that God cares about our anxieties. God’s precious Word brings peace, guidance and strength in the trying times. One particular verse from God’s Word, the Bible, is a great source of encouragement for us—1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you”.  As we put our trust in God in this way He will bring together His plan for our lives. As we follow His calling our fear will be gone. As we rest on His promises He will give us the faith for the unknown.   Every day we can thank God as we stand on the promises He gives us including the following recorded in Paul’s letter to the Philippians 4: 19 “And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus”; and the promise of Jesus to His disciples as He ascended to His Heavenly Father, “..low I am with you always, even unto the end of the world”.

RESPONSE IN FAITH –

GOD’s SUMMONS

Will you come and follow me,

If I but call your name?

Will you go where you don’t know

and never be the same?

Will you let my love be shown,

will You let my love be known,

will you let my life be grown

in you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind

if I but call your name?

Will you care for cruel and kind

and never be the same?

Will you risk the hostile stare

should your life attract or scare?

Will you let me answer prayer

in you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see

if I but call your name?

Will you set the prisoners free

and never be the same?

Will you kiss the leper clean,

and do such as this unseen,

and admit to what I mean

in you and you in me?

Will you love the ‘you’ you hide

if I but call your name?

Will you quell the fear inside

and never be the same?

Will you use the faith you’ve found

to reshape the world around,

through my sight and touch and sound

in you and you in me?

Lord, your summons echoes true

when you but call my name.

Let me turn and follow you

and never he the same.

In your company I’ll go

where your love and footsteps show.

Thus I’ll move and live and grow

in you and you in me

  • His grace for us to be channels of His love to all in our community, whatever their colour, standing, race, or creed.

Prayer life: Right from the Knees

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. - Colossians 4:2I read somewhere “Our prayers lay the track down which God’s power can come. Like a mighty locomotive, his power is irresistible, but it cannot reach us without rails."We too have to believe that prayer makes a difference for the one being prayed for, but also for the one doing the praying.  Prayer is communication with God. We believe that God is mighty, but that He is also mysterious. We don't always understand why He answers some prayers but is silent at other times. Prayer is our attachment to God and to the hearts of the people we pray for.We know that prayer doesn't solve all our problems, and often what we need is physical help for our physical needs. Everyone needs prayer, and many people would love to pray for you if they knew what you needed. Asking for prayer is not a sign of weakness but strength for there are things which we don’t have control over.Strong people ask for prayer, and so do the weak. Some days, you are not sure which you are, and that's perfectly okay.So whether we are weak or strong, it's simple: Right from the Knees, you can ask for prayer and pray for one another. And people are around to help and pray for you - waiting to hold you up and support you. God wants to share this time with you. He wants to meet your needs, though sometimes instead of meeting a surface need, He meets a need that is much deeper and more profound. He's not always predictable, but he's always reliable. That's the value of prayer.God Bless.                                                                                                          John Cain

The legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of passage

Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of passage?His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him and leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience because each lad must come into manhood on his own. The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him. Maybe even some human might do him harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man! Finally, after a horrific night, the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold. It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him. He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm. We, too, are never alone. Even when we don't know it, our Heavenly Father is watching over us, sitting on the stump beside us. When trouble comes, all we have to do is reach out to Him. If not, perhaps you took off your blindfold before dawn. Moral of the Story: Just because you can't see God, doesn't mean He is not there 'For we walk by faith, not by sight.'  (2 Corinthians 5:7)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Life is Precious, Life is Good
Even though the sun’s not shining and the sky is dull and grey,
even though you watched the postman walk straight past your door  today,
even though the phones not ringing when you wished and hoped it should,
look around you, count your blessings, life is precious, life is good.
Even when you’re disappointed and your plans have gone awry,
even when the friends you trusted never call or walk on by.
Put these troubled thoughts behind you, look ahead the way you should.
Tell yourself, with each new morning life is precious, life is good!
Chester & Stoke-on-Trent District + Sandbach & Alsager Circuit – News
 Rev’d Simon Sutcliffe
Simon has been called by the Holy Spirit, and accepted along with other called and accepted ministers, to spearhead new ministries of evangelical Christian Outreach within Methodist Districts in the UK. His ministry as Superintendent of the Sandbach and Alsager Circuit of Methodist Churches and Minister of our Haslington and Winterley Churches comes to an end at the end of this coming February to take up his new post in March. We pray Simon and his new ministry at God’s leading, will be richly blessed to God’s glory and the extension of His Kingdom.    We say a grateful thank you to Simon for his ministry and leadership amongst us during this past one and a half years since his coming to us in September 2008.
Changes to Circuit Minister appointments
Our Circuit has not been matched with a new Minister from September onwards to take the place of Simon. The Rev’d Peter Barber, the Chairman of our Chester & Stoke on Trent District,  will take on the role, from 1st March, of Superintendent Minister of our Sandbach & Alsager Circuit. Someone will be appointed to minister to our Winterley and Haslington Churches but it has not yet been announced who it will be, and for how long.  Please pray for those tasked with making the ministerial appointments, that they will know the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and for those taking up new posts, that they will know the Holy Spirit’s calling.
 Circuit Changes
As from September 2010 our Sandbach & Alsager Circuit will cease to exist as we join with other Circuits to form the South Cheshire Circuit of Methodist Churches.
 Circuit Service
Sunday 28th February at 6.30pm at Wheelock Methodist Church.
What does Jesus mean to me?
What does Jesus mean to me?
Jesus?
My Jesus?
Boring?
Irrelevant?
Just another figure from history?
Or even an imaginary figure who has never existed?
Jesus?
Not my Jesus.
My Jesus is the reason I can no longer sing the hymn `Amazing Grace’
without tears tumbling down my cheeks
My Jesus is the one who last year carried me on His back.
When things were so very black, and all was despair.
When I was stretched almost to breaking .point,
He held me in the palm of His hand
Jesus?
Boring?
Irrelevant?
Not my Jesus.
My Jesus is alive today – as He was yesterday, as He will be tomorrow.
My Jesus is the central character in the greatest story ever told
- and it’s not finished yet!
My Jesus is all knowing and all-seeing.
My Jesus is perfect, yet forgiving.
So forgiving, that He loves `a wretch like me’.
So forgiving.
And that’s just as well, as I need an immense amount of forgiveness.
My Jesus is my `strength and shield’.
Alone I am so weak.
With Him, I am invincible.
For the victory has already been won.
My strength. My shield.
My Saviour.
From Him. there is no condemnation, not even of me.
From Him. there is only love.
My Jesus. My Saviour.
Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
Creator of the universe.
Powerful in His majesty
Yet He wants to know me.
How wonderful.
My Jesus.
God is our Heavenly Father
God is your Father, it is His job to look after you.
It is your job to realise that He does!
Hudson Taylor of the China Inland Mission, reflecting on the words spoken of a preacher in his day, wrote:`I have frequently thought of the words uttered by Professor Charteris, that in the Lord Jesus we have a life of steady uninterrupted development from the cradle to the cross; but His was the only life developed in that direction! The true Christian life begins where His life ended, at the cross; and the true development of the Christian life is from the cross to the cradle, until we can rest in the omnipotent arms of His infinite Wisdom and Love. We do not know what burdens or perplexities or difficulties the future may bring; but we know Him, whose we are, and whom we serve. He knows all; this suffices for us.’|
David said in 1 Chronicles 28:3-6, that God had chosen to built the temple; for God said, “I have chosen Solomon to be my son and I will be his Father!” Do you understand? God says, Solomon will be MY son and I will be HIS Father! This is the relationship WE have with God! He has chosen US to be HIS children!
 “God is MY Father, He is MINE! MINE!” What a relationship! And suddenly the power of God transformed my life, my prayer. I AM THE CHILD OF GOD!
If you have confessed that your sin is forgiven, you are NEW, you have died to the old, you have NEW life, eternal life – NOW! You are RISEN with Christ! You don’t need `Christian psychology’! It’s done! You ARE a child of God! He’s YOUR Father! You are HIS and He is YOURS! There are so many Christians today who don’t have that certainty about the effectiveness of their salvation. But if you had that certainty, the world would want it also.
A German's View on Islam
This is by far the best explanation of the Muslim terrorist situation I have ever read. His references to past history are accurate and clear. Not long, easy to understand, and well worth the read. The author is said to be Dr. Emanuel Tanay, a well known and well respected psychiatrist.                                                        Maire Pedder
A man, whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism. 'Very few people were true Nazis,' he said, 'but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.'We are told again and again by 'experts' and 'talking heads' that Islam is the religion of peace, and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the spectra of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam. The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honour-kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers. The hard quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the 'silent majority,' is cowed and extraneous. Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China's huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people. The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet. And, who can forget Rwanda , which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were 'peace loving'? History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our powers of reason we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points: Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence. Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don't speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun. Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late. As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts; the fanatics who threaten our way of life.Lastly, anyone who doubts that the issue is serious is contributing to the passiveness that allows the problems to expand. So, extend yourself a bit and send this on and on and on! Let us hope that thousands, world wide, read this and think about it, and send it on - before it's too late. Author: Dr. Emanuel Tanay M.D, a well known and well respected psychiatrist.
Editors note:Jesus taught us all that God our Heavenly Father so loved ALL that He gave His only begotten Son, that ALL who believe in Him , will not perish but have everlasting life. This includes all the human race, whatever their colour, race or creed before they come to know Him as their Heavenly Father. His love and saving grace through our Lord Jesus Christ is for ALL. This is His good news— His Gospel.Jesus commanded His disciples, those who believe and know Him as Saviour and Lord and commit to follow Him, and spoke these words to them, “All power in Heaven and on earth, has been given to me. You, then, are to go and make disciples of all nations and baptise them in the name of Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you and, remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the world Jesus was a pacifist— the King of peace and not of war, but He was not passive in His actions and message. His actions and teaching reached out to all to bring them into a knowledge of God’s love for them with forgiveness for sin and healing into wholeness of life, and spoke out against the evils which separated mankind from a knowledge of God’s love and saving grace for them and ultimate eternal separation from Him. Our calling, as His disciples, is to take His Gospel to all mankind including those of fanatical / terrorist leanings, acting in God’s love and His peace – with the mind of Christ our Saviour living within us moment by moment, and as Paul writes to the church in Ephesus “In conclusion be strong—not in yourselves but in the Lord, in the power of His boundless resource. Put on God’s complete armour so that you can resist all the devil’s methods of attack. For our fight is not against any physical enemy; it is against organisations and powers that are spiritual. We are up against the unseen power that controls this dark world, and spiritual agents from the headquarters of evil …. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication….Peace be to the whole Christian community, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all who have an undying love for our Lord Jesus Christ.     Ephesians 6 verses 10 – 12,  18a, 23- J.B. Phillips & NRS version
The Hereafter
The Rector called on Mrs. Bloggs and told her that at her time of life she should be thinking of the hereafter. “Rector” she said “I do that all the time, in the living room, in the study, in the kitchen or up the stairs. I’m always asking myself – “now, what am I here after”?
The mum saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.“If Jesus was sitting here, he would say: `Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.’”Kevin turned to his brother and said: `Ryan, you can be Jesus!” With thanks to Joy Magazine and as quoted in Inspire Magazine
A father was at the beach with his children
when the four-year-old son ran up to him,
grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore
where a seagull lay dead in the sand.
"Daddy, what happened to him?" the son asked.
"He died and went to Heaven," the Dad replied.
The boy thought a moment and then said,
"Did God throw him back down?"
Life’s Riches
The corner stone of every home,
the most important part,
is never laid upon the earth
but in a mother’s heart.
|
Still it gives me pleasure,
as I look upon my hand,
it isn’t very modern,
just a plain gold band.
It didn’t cost a fortune,
but was all we had that day.
We think it was a bargain,
it brought happiness our way.
|
I used to wish and plan and dream
and think of things I’d like to do.
So many things I longed to buy,
but now I’m older, wiser too.
What do I need but hearth and home,
enough to eat, a bed, a chair,
and gifts that money cannot buy,
a friend to keep and love to share.
The years have flown so quickly by,
and I see life another way.
Just like the miser counts his gold
I count my riches every day.
“…I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life…” (Deuteronomy 30:19)
Every day we have the opportunity to choose thoughts of life and victory or choose thoughts of defeat and despair.  God promises that when we choose His ways, we are choosing life and victory
