NOVEMBER

(Issue 11 - 2009)

We welcome you to our `Newsletter'

and pray you find a blessing through its pages.

Almighty and merciful God

we will remember  -

those who have, and still do, die or become maimed in war -

grant us the determination to look for ways of peace

in our homes, in our friendships, at our workplace

and in national and international relations.

|

that Christ died for sins once and for all, -

 the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God.

for God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son

that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

guide us in the ways of your eternal peace

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our lead letter this month has been written by Mr. Peter Robertshaw, a Local Preacher in our Sandbach and Alsager Circuit of Methodist Churches.
       The other day I was talking about the Church with a church treasurer, and he said "You know the trouble with the church today?" "No?" I said, although I could have mustered a few suggestions. "It's lost all sense of urgency!" he retorted.
            And that got me thinking how right he is. Urgency was paramount to the early Christians, and if the early Church believed time was short, how much more so for us two thousand years later. Yet somehow we have all got rather complacent and do we not run the great risk of "running out of oil" before the bridegroom returns?
            When will Jesus return? He tells us himself that the hour is unknown, and that he will come as a thief in the night; but He does give signs to watch for, and in Matthew 24:7 among these we read "Countries will fight each other, kingdoms will attack one another. There will be famines and earthquakes everywhere" and in verse 12 He says "Such will be the spread of evil that many people's love will grow cold"
            These things are not mentioned to scare us or alarm us. They are not once and for all signs, but they are continuing signs, and they will intensify until Jesus returns - but are not these signs very much with us?
            But what is our response. Yes of course there is a place for concern. There is a need to keep pressure on the government and the authorities who provide for policing and the judicial system. There is need to provide for those who suffer through the effects of famine and war and varying disasters. Does not the parable of the Good Samaritan tell us as much.
Indeed has not the impetus of the Christian Church always been to educate, to care, and to provide? And does not Jesus tell us "whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did it for me." But these things should accompany and not replace the Gospel message!
            To the apostles preaching was their main concern, and they set aside seven deacons to look after the cares and concerns of those in need, yet even they would pray for and support, and at times join in the active witness of all the disciples.
            But we look at earthquakes and famine and all our attention seems to be absorbed into somehow re-inventing the wheel and somehow trying not to use what technology has provided.. Earth and Heaven will pass away and a new creation and a new order will emerge whatever our endeavours to stop or delay, whether or not Global Warming is the means to this. But surely it is in God's timing. Is He not in control?
            He calls us certainly to be good stewards, caring, and fair and just in what we use and share. and it is important how we dispose of our waste so that it is not a blight to everyone else.
            But surely for the Church our effort and resources should not be focused on "Global Warming" - Surely our task is to give a clear and definite Global Warning.
            "Now is the Day of Salvation!" Too soon comes the Day of Judgement.
Peter.
Prayer life: Effectiveness in Prayer Requires A Passion for Prayer
What passionate prayer is not:
Passionate prayer is not emotion-driven. Although emotion may be present, passion in prayer is not merely an emotional expression nor does it flow from feelings alone.
Some personalities are more feeling based than others. Because someone doesn't emote in their prayers, it doesn't necessarily mean they aren't passionate.
-----Don't judge people based on their emotional expression.
Passionate prayer is not always impressive. High-sounding spiritual words or rhetoric may not be a part of this kind of prayer.
Someone who doesn't know Christian lingo can still engage in passionate prayer.
-----Don't judge people based on their eloquence or lack thereof.
Note: If people sense that they may be judged in these ways, they will shy away from praying aloud.
What passionate prayer includes:
A devotion to prayer: being faithful and diligent in it; a commitment; a priority
Acts 2:42; Romans 12:12, Luke 18:1 Col. 4:2
 An attentiveness in prayer: being alert, watchful, clear-minded, self-controlled
 Eph. 6:18, Col 4:2, 1 peter 4:7
 A persistence in prayer: never giving up, always keeping on, continual
 Luke 18: 1, Eph. 6: 18 Matt. 7: 7 Psalm 55: 16-17
 A fervency in prayer: being zealous; an enthusiasm or energy, James 5: 16
 A Spirit-propelled effort to prayer: walking in the Spirit; a motivation, a power source, Eph. 6: 18 Rom. 8: 26-27
 A wholehearted attitude toward prayer: seeking and loving Him with all of who you are Jer. 29: 12-13 Matt. 22: 37
 A faith-driven expectancy in prayer: being thankful before getting an answer; an anticipation Col. 4: 2, Mark 11:24
A purpose in prayer: lining up with His will; a meaningfulness. Matt. 6: 7-13; 1 John 5: 14
What is at the root of passionate prayer:
It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.
( Prov. 19: 2)
Passion in prayer needs to grow out of knowledge -- both head and heart knowledge of who He is: His character
 God is fully capable of answering our prayers.
--Development of faith
 knowledge of how He works: His ways
 knowledge of what He says: His Word
 God will always be consistent with His Word in the way He responds to prayer.
 --Development of discernment
 How to cultivate the passion for prayer in others:
Teach and preach in a way that people are presented with God as the great God He is, that helps people to understand His ways, and that gives them a good foundation of His Word. In so doing, you will help develop faith, perspective, and discernment that will grow their passion to meet with Him in prayer. A passion for prayer stems out of a passion for God.
Keep the purpose of prayer ever before the people. Take great care that prayer doesn't become routine or ritualistic.
God Bless                                    John Cain
Psalm 23
(For the Work Place)
The Lord is my real boss, and I shall not want.
He gives me peace, when chaos is all around me.
He gently reminds me to pray and to do all things without
murmuring and complaining.
He reminds me that He is my source and not my job.
He restores my sanity every day and guides my decisions
that I might honour Him in all that I do.
Even though I face absurd amounts of e-mails, system
crashes, unrealistic deadlines, budget cutbacks, gossiping
co-workers, discriminating supervisors and an aging body
that doesn't cooperate every morning, I still will not stop-
for He is with me! His presence, His peace, and His power
will see me through.
He raises me up, even when they fail to promote me.
He claims me as His own, even when the company threatens
to let me go. His Faithfulness and love is better than any bonus
check.
His retirement plan beats any 401k there is!
When it's all said and done, I'll be working for Him a whole lot
longer and for that,
I BLESS HIS NAME!!!!!!!!
Building Progress:
It has been a long and very busy seven months since work began on the church building and now it is all but finished! I know from comments made that many of you can't wait to get back into the church and return to some sense of normality. Just to have the morning service at a fixed time will be a great relief and we are now very close to making Bradeley Road our spiritual home once again.
As this news sheet goes to press the church building is complete, the decorating, fixture fitting and door hanging is done and HMC will soon be having a thorough professional clean. Once Paul Roome has handed the building back to us the sound and visual equipment will be installed in mid November. This will take about a week and then hopefully the chairs will be delivered during the last week of the month and the building will be ready to use.
The Property and Finance Group has done its best to carry out the work entrusted to them according to the design agreed by the Church Council and hopes that you will be pleased with the final result. The building they will be handing on still needs additional equipment and furnishings which fall outside of the provision of the remit they worked to, so don't be surprised if everything you hope to see is not there yet!
There will be an opportunity to view the building from 7.00 pm to 7.45 pm on December 1st prior to the Church Council meeting at 8.00, I hope you like what you see and get a real feel for the potential the church undoubtedly has.
God Bless,                       Dave Nickells
Sure & Steadfast
Junior Section   meet at Winterley Methodist Church each Tuesday at usual times - 6pm to 7.15pm - until further notice.
The Juniors is open to all boys aged between the age of 7 and 10 years on 1st September and we could do with new members.
We currently have only two leaders who also have young families and commitment and so we also really need helpers, who do not necessarily come along every week.
I know that some of our Juniors brought friends along in June and July, I would be grateful if parents can pass this message to other parents that are not on e-mail.
Boys Brigade Enrolment Service ¬>
This year the enrolment service is on Sunday 15th November at 6.30pm at Haslington & Crewe United Reformed Church, The Dingle. This is a very important event in the calendar of 1st Haslington BB - please do your best to come and support them as the boys and their leaders are enrolled for another year and make their promises. We give grateful thanks to the BB leaders for all their commitment and hard work throughout each year, and to the splendid way the boys respond as they are influenced by being part of the BB.
Captains Report
This is my 13th report as Captain of the 1st Haslington Company and again we have enjoyed a busy 12 months with many positive outcomes.
 The Junior Section has remained stable and had a varied programme on Tuesday evenings. It is a lively group and as such needs a lively programme. This has been achieved by Clare and Mike with help from John and also Seniors especially Joe and Ryan. The change of venue recently has made the running of the section more difficult but a lively summer programme is planned.
We are lucky that the Company Section is of such a size that enables us to enter District and National competitions. This year we have improved our performance and entered the District Football and Ten Pin Bowling competitions, being runners up in the latter. We also entered the 125 Challenge Competition where, again, we nearly won, coming 61st and 135th in the UK. But the highlight must be reaching the finals of the National Masterteam Competition in Hertfordshire. The team was one of only two teams qualifying from England and Wales who competed against teams from Ireland and Scotland. Although not winning, this was a great achievement and I am sure that the lads will remember the day with some fondness.
Both sections have changed over to the new awards programme now, this has been a challenge in itself and raised some difficulties, but the lads seem to be enjoying the activities so we must be doing well.
It has been great to see the older lads growing in to mature young adults and taking a real interest in running the Company. It has been a long time since we had five young men gaining their President's Award and it is especially gratifying to see a group undertaking their Queen's Award together and still being enthusiastic after all the years they have been in the BB. The future of 1st Haslington will be very much influenced by their actions over the next year when their ideas are put in to practice. With this in mind there will be some slight changes in the way we organise the Company Section.
As always, we struggle with having enough adult leaders to carry out the programme we would like, this is what holds us back. However, I am very grateful to all the adults who have helped out individually over the past 12 months - too many to mention here. Next year is the 40th Awards Evening, with that in mind and with everyone's help, we want to make next year milestone Awards Evening a fitting event.
CREWE WOMEN'S AID
At the end of September, I attended the Annual General Meeting of the above organization.  I was glad I went because it gave me a better insight into work being carried out at the Refuge and in other fields helping mothers and children who have suffered through domestic abuse.
Not only is there a Refuge in Crewe which has 10 bedrooms where families can come when they have nowhere else to go but in 2007 they opened a Support Centre and have purchased 4 ‘move-on' houses to be used by families who are ready to start a new life with the support of the staff from the Refuge and Centre.  Praise was also given to Wulvern Housing for the help they receive in re-housing families from them. In 2008/2009 the Refuge was used by 69 women and 112 children and the Floating Support team supported 49 families with 97 children to maintain independent living within the local community.
The Lily Jones Centre is very well used, as well as valuable office accommodation there is an active support group which meets weekly.  From this Group several outings to the seaside and local farm parks have been organized where mums have been able to spend some ‘family time' with their children.  Sales of clothing and toys are held once a month at the Centre.
Also at the Centre there are rooms where women can see a Solicitor or Counsellor while their children are looked after.  There is an IT suite to support them with education and keeping them in touch with family and friends and some of the women have completed courses on the government Initiative Train to Gain and received certificates.  The IT suite is also used weekly by children as an After School club where they can use the computers to assist them with their homework and gain IT skills
A recent addition at the Centre has been Laundry facilities where mums who do not have facilities at home can come and do their washing and ironing.  A kitchen is soon to be installed where mums can be taught how to cook meals on a budget.
All these facilities cannot be maintained without the generous giving of local businesses, churches and other organizations.  I have listed below items that can be donated to help the people who are supported by the Crewe Women's Aid:
                Non-perishable food items - pasta, tinned food, beverages
                Toiletries
                Underwear for women and children (new)
                Nightwear for women and children
Clothing for women
Clothing for children (all ages)
Books/Toys/Games
Stationery
Household items
                Cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, kitchen equipment
                Bedding/towels
                Small household furniture (bedside tables, lamps)
                Curtains/nets
                Rugs/floor coverings
                Lightshades
Cleaning products for women going into a new tenancy
Other handy items, i.e. torches, lightbulbs, candles
Garden tools/DIY equipment
Anyone who has anything which can be donated please would they give me a ring - Ruth Wheeldon (01270-582087) and I will make arrangements to deliver the goods.
Thank you.      Ruth
Losing It
I sometimes lose my hankies, I can't think where they go,
I sometimes lose my glasses - I had them once, I know.
My gloves and scarves desert me in ways beyond my ken
and when I find the crossword, I know I'll lose the pen.
I've often lost my bearings when muddled by a crowd,
I've even lost my patience of which I'm far from proud.
But one thing I'll endeavour to cling to till the end,
It's what I really hate to lose, you've guessed it right - a friend.
THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH
The Church is not an island in the middle of the sea.
It's not for special people, it's there for you and me.
It's not stuck up a mountain, in a forest or on a beach.
There's always one quite near you, well within your reach.
Of Churches there are many, with different ways and tongues.
In one thing they're united they always will fight wrongs.
It's always there to help you, not try to run your life,
but will always offer comfort, in trouble or in strife.
You'll find them in the Cities, in the Towns or Hamlets neat,
in quiet peaceful country lanes or on the village street.
So when you need as special friend, who'll not leave you in the lurch.
Why don't you just walk down your street and pop into your Church.
The following is the `thought' for 12th October from `The Word for Today'
When you feel anxious
‘Do not be anxious about anything.' Philippians 4:6
Anxiety starts as a trickle then creates a channel in our mind through which all our thoughts begin to flow. Most of our anxieties fall into three categories: 1) Anxiety about things we all face: like aging, disability, retirement, loneliness, financial uncertainty, accidents, illness, losing a loved one, and death. 2) Anxiety about things we all must do: like making decisions, starting and ending relationships, losing weight, changing careers, making a mistake. 3) Anxiety reflecting our inner state of mind: These anxieties reveal how we feel about our ability to handle things. For example, fear of rejection can affect every relationship in your life. In order to avoid being hurt you shut others out, your world grows smaller and your opportunities for personal growth are more limited. Many of our anxieties can be reduced to one question, ‘What if I can't handle it?' Your mind is the battlefield where victory is won or lost. So ask yourself, ‘Would I still be anxious if I knew for certain I could handle anything that came up?' The answer is no. Anxiety can't mmobilize you and steal your joy when you know you can handle whatever happens. You say, ‘That sounds too simple.' Not when you bring God into the picture! Here are two great anxiety eliminating Scriptures you can stand on when times are tough: 1) ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me' (Philippians 4:13 NKJV). 2)
'Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds' (Philippians 4:6-7 NIV).
KIDS in CHURCH
A little girl was asked in Sunday School if she knew the story of Adam & Eve.
She replied, "First God made Adam, and then He looked at him and said, `I think I can do better than that' - so He created woman."
|
A little boy was overheard praying, `Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it, I'm having a real good time like I am.'
|
A Sunday School teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, `And why is it necessary to be quiet in Church?
One bright little girl replied, `Because people are sleeping.'
|
A mother was teaching her young daughter the Lord's Prayer and she would repeat after her mother the well loved lines. Eventually, she thought she could recite it on her own, so her mother listened with pride as her daughter carefully said each word right up to just before the end, "Lead us not into temptation," she prayed, "but deliver us some e-mail. Amen."
Her mother smiled, deciding to put her right next time.
|
Dear God,
I didn't think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset you made on Tuesday.
|
Dear God,
If yo watch me in church on Sunday, I'll show you my new shoes.
"...I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life..." (Deuteronomy 30:19)
Every day we have the opportunity to choose thoughts of life and victory or choose thoughts of defeat and despair.  God promises that when we choose His ways, we are choosing life and victory
