NEWSLETTER Haslington Methodist Church Minister: Rev Simon Sutcliffe 20, Tate Drive, Haslington, CW1 5FZ. Tel: 01270 501552 OCTOBER (Issue 10 - 2009) We welcome you to our `Newsletter' and pray you find a blessing through its pages.
O Lord of heaven and earth and sea, to You all praise and glory be; how shall we show our love to Thee, who gives us all?
You did not spare Your only Son, but gave Him for a world undone. And freely with that blessed one You give us all. Christopher Wordsworth
Our lead letter this month is based on a letter written for our Newsletter October 1989. The details of happenings at that time have been replaced with detail of what is happening currently in our world, but the original messaged expressed has not been altered. - Editor Dear Friends, Daily we hear and read of news of the global financial crisis and the wars that are raging in Africa, Afghanistan, and the violence throughout the world, the repression of freedom to peoples and persecution because of faith and race etc How do we respond? We can feel angry, become cynical, sad and depressed, or try to ignore it and try to withdraw as much as possible from this imperfect world. Yet none of this is a real. remedy. The love of God expressed in Jesus Christ is the only remedy to the disturbed flawed heart. So our response has to be that there can be no fence sitting for us. We must open our lives to God's love and share it by the way we live. Our lives every so often feel in a rut, yet can we not have a vision of greater things? Each time you take Communion, sing the wonderful hymns of faith (old & new), and in these and other countless ways is not God prompting us to choose fully His Love and live it out. Love conquers evil because my life is touched. Love conquers evil because I see this in the life of Jesus. Do you know the gospel passage of the dying thief? Even in the face of death the convicted criminal was moved by Jesus. Even in our life let us make an impact, not the deadly impact that greed, war, hatred and persecution make, but the Explosion of Love. Every age group can participate, every one can be a channel of His Love. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Make me a channel of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring Your love; where there is injury, Your pardon, Lord; and where there's doubt, true faith in You:
Make me a channel of Your peace. Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope; where there is darkness, only light; and where there's sadness, every joy:
Make me a channel of Your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving to all men that we receive, and in dying that we're born to eternal life. Autumn Reds and yellows, orange too, contrast with the green and blue; Autumn colours, bright and fair, help dispel our earthly care.

Michael R. Abbott from his book "Echoes of Eternity ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Prayer - | Churches Together ¬> Haslington - Crewe Green - Winterley PRAYER POINT (PP) The Neighbourhood Prayer Scheme - A service to all within our community For all - whether you are connected with a church or not.
For PRAYER - October 2009 Pray for:
Prayer life: RECEIVING from GOD "And we will receive from Him whatever we ask
because we obey Him and do the things that please Him" When you pray, are you confident that you will receive what you've asked? Many people today wonder if God hears their prayers. They aren't certain if He will answer. But the scripture promises that when we obey God's commands, when we live a life that is pleasing to Him, we can be sure that we will receive what we ask. Understand that God's Word is His will. That's why it's so important to make His Word the number one priority in our lives. When you keep God's promises in your heart and mind, it changes and shapes your character. It makes your thoughts and desires line up with God's thoughts and desires. And when you are praying according to God's will, you can have the confidence to receive what you've asked. Make the commitment to obey the Word and do what pleases Him. As you do, you'll see His hand of blessing in every area of your life. You'll be equipped to move forward in the confidence and victory He has planned for you!. Father in heaven, I declare that I am committed to Your Word. I invite You to reshape my thoughts and character. Make me more like You. I bless You today and thank You for giving me confidence when I pray. In Jesus' Name. Amen. | Week of Prayer for World Peace Peoples throughout the world of many faiths will be focusing in prayer in particularly on world peace during the annual `Week of Prayer for World Peace' which this year is 11th - 18th October, and encourage you to join in prayer with us. Prayers for peace ¬> The International Prayer for Peace Lead me from death to life, from falsehood to truth. Lead me from despair to hope, from fear to trust. Lead me from hate to love, from war to peace. Let peace fill our hearts, our world, our universe. | From leaflet issued by Week of Prayer for World Peace organisers `Peace-makers' We pray for: all peacemakers; to live our own lives as worthy peace-makers.
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
May I never cause pain to any being. May I never utter untruth. May there be mutual love in the world. May delusion dwell at a distance.
May all beings be at peace and find the true peace within their own hearts About `Week of Prayer for World Peace' Although it was a Christian initiative that led to the founding of the Week of Prayer for World Peace in 1974, it soon became an inter faith activity, and now welcomes everyone, of all faith traditions or none, to take part. Our first Chairman, the late Dr. Edward Carpenter, former Dean of Westminster, established the guiding principle of the Week in the words `The peace of the world must be prayed for by the faiths of the world', and this is still the basis of our work today. For those who want to persevere with the idea of praying with people of other faiths, three thoughts may be helpful. First, the different prayers that we say are said by neighbours in the same town and the same street every week and by worshiping together we simply bring under one roof what happens anyway under the same sky. Secondly, we are convinced that there is only one humanity that prays, and one Divinity that we pray to, whatever different opinions we may have about that one Divinity, Thirdly, we recognise that inter faith partnership does not itself imply agreement. The things we agree on are many, and precious. The things we disagree on are precious too. When we stand with a follower of another faith who is praying, whenever we can agree with the prayer, we give it our interior assent. Where we cannot agree. we withhold our interior assent. It is still good to stand with that person as a friend and as a partner for peace. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "UNDESERVED BLESSING ‘ "God....has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ." (Ephesians 1.3) Tennis superstar Arthur Ashe died of AIDS, which he contracted from a blood transfusion during surgery. More than a great athlete, Ashe was a gentleman who inspired and encouraged many with his exemplary behaviour on and off court. Ashe could have become embittered and self-pitying in the face of his disease, but be maintained a grateful attitude. He explained: "if I asked. ‘Why me'?' about my troubles, I would have to ask, ‘Why me?' about my blessings. Why my winning Wimbledon? Why my marrying a beautiful, gifted woman and have a wonderful child?' Ashe's attitude rebukes those of us who often grumble: "Why me? Why is God allowing this to happen?' Even if we're suffering acutely, we must not forget the Mercies God pours into our lives - such things as food, shelter, and friends - blessings that many are deprived of. And what about spiritual blessings? We can hold the very Word of God in our hands and read it. We have the knowledge of His Saving Grace, the Comfort His Spirit, and the Joyful Assurance of Life Everlasting with Jesus. Think God's Blessings and ask: "Why me?' Then your grumbling will give way to Praise. Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly and you will be singing as the days go by.

Our Website Our website, address ccgi.collinet.plus.com/hmc, has now been updated and will be kept in tune with our changing situations as we go through this period of building closure for modernising / renewal internally. Nick has placed on the website photographs of the progress to-date of the renewal of our Church building. Could Church `groups' detail information they would like to see on the site and I will publish it. Thank you, Cliff. Wright Building Progress: The end is nigh! The re-furbishing is moving on at a pace and there is every possibility that we will be able to have access to our church by the end of October. All the major building work is done with the exception of the ground works to the exterior so we are now in a place where we are trying to pull everything together. The kitchen units are partly in place and the toilets will be plumbed in during the coming week, carpet tiles and chairs are about to be ordered and the radiators and lighting are still to be fitted. The sound desk is being constructed and the sound and visual system will be in place by the middle of October so as you can imagine there is a lot of back ground activity going on! The coming month or so will be quite hectic as we try to get everything in place and find out if it all fits and looks as good as we believe it will. Our aim has always been to produce a finished building that will suit the varied forms of worship that HMC has a vision for and in it give God all the glory. Even during the times when the building was stripped to its barest the men working there have always respected it. Now it is almost finished and as I stood alone in the worship area the other day I prayed and thanked God for all that has been achieved and for the real sense that walls that have soaked up decades of prayer are still full of blessing. God Bless, Dave Nickells

Junior Section ¬> Meet at Winterley Methodist Church each Tuesday at usual times - 6pm to 7.15pm - until further notice. The Juniors is open to all boys aged between the age of 7 and 10 years on 1st September and we could do with new members. We currently have only two leaders who also have young families and commitment and so we also really need helpers, who do not necessarily come along every week. I know that some of our Juniors brought friends along in June and July, I would be grateful if parents can pass this message to other parents that are not on e-mail. Rob Welch 01270 501335 07765 847247 Company Section ¬> Now meeting at Elworth Methodist Church each Thursday at usual times - 7pm to 9.15pm - until further notice. What is the Boys' Brigade? The Boys' Brigade is a worldwide uniformed organisation for Boys which aims to combine drill and a range of activities with Christian values. It was one of the world's first uniformed organisations founded by William Alexander Smith which in 2008 celebrated its 125th Anniversary. 1st Haslington is one of the thousands of Brigades around the world which offers activities such as Football and Cricket to Weekend Camps and Kayaking and many more. A Brief History of 1st Haslington ¬> 1st Haslington started in 1970 with the formation of the Company section, the Junior Section followed a year later in 1971. 1st Haslington was originally part of the Warrington Battalion, but when more Boys' Brigades started up in nearby areas the East Cheshire Battalion was set up. With 24 members in our Company, it grew to become a big success. The 1st Haslington Boys Brigade has had four captains - Ray Smith, Reg Shore, John Cain and Rob Welch (our current captain) In the 1970's, 1st Haslington had a brass band which was the BB National champions for two years. We also had a quiz team which reached the national finals twice and in the 1980's we were the North West District football champions. Today we have the biggest Company Section in our Battalion. A letter from Craig Edgare ( of HMC and Saltmine)¬> Hello Everyone I am currently on my summer holiday from Saltmine (although summer "catch up on sleep" is a bit more accurate) I haven't been able to catch up with everyone so I thought I would send a quick email to let everyone know how I am doing. I am now permanently employed by Saltmine, unfortunately this doesn't come with a higher wage, and I am looking forward to another year of work, with new gap year staff and more responsibility. My film "The Agent" is now on its 1st edit, I am hoping that the film, along with its accompanying bible notes, will really make a difference to the way people look at Jesus and his character. In another piece of exciting news I am scheduled to go to the United Arab Emirates in October to perform the Hope play and tell thousands of young Christians and Muslims about God's love and the sacrifice of Jesus, this is actually illegal in the U.A.E but it is an unbelievable opportunity to speak to young people who may never hear the truth about Jesus in their lifetime. I am hoping that I will be able to come with Saltmine to the church when it is finished and perform a free show for you and the community, I would love to show you the ways that we communicate the gospel. Being a permanent staff member however means that I have to take fund raising a lot more seriously, Saltmine have given me the target of raising £5000 a year whilst working for them, although if I don't meet this target I will not be sacked, do have to show that I have tried. I do hate to ask the church for donations as I know the financial climate we live in is a harsh one and with the renovation of the church I know money is needed elsewhere. If I can ask that anyone who is interested in supporting me give what they can, either as a one off payment or as a small donation given monthly it would be a great help. I will be at church on Sunday and I will have donation forms with me, you can also contact me on this address if you wish to donate. Donating to Saltmine will help pay my wage, help fund overseas tours and help us fund longer theatre tours that will allow us to reach more people with the message of Christ's love. Thank you for reading and please remember, if your prayers of support, encouragement and protection are all you can spare me at this time, then that is worth more than money to me. I hope to see you all before I go back to Dudley and while I have been here it has been pleasure to worship and pray with you once again. Yours in his name Craig About Saltmine Vision ¬> Saltmine is a pioneering organisation with Christ-like values, bringing a holistic approach to making a difference worldwide with excellence, compassion and integrity through partnerships, projects, personal development and creative initiatives. Ethos ¬> The ethos of Saltmine Trust is our motivation for all our work. It is to work together to extend Jesus' model of the Kingdom of God on earth by living out a lifestyle of love, truth, justice, mercy and forgiveness according to His teaching. We are inspired by His message - life and example through which God's unconditional love for all people is expressed. Our ethos is carried through all areas of activities within the organisation - our communication, our administration, our creativity, theatre tours, music, the development of media resources, and our work in Eastern Europe and beyond. History ¬> Saltmine was founded in 1980, and was the brainchild of Dave Pope, who wanted to create an organisation that would be a vehicle for mission, and yet at the same time, provide a training ground for 'up and coming' talent and leadership. The formative years found Saltmine involved in local church initiatives here in the UK, and providing teams to assist in reaching out to the local community. At the same time, it developed links with Eastern Europe, supporting the development of the emerging church in Bulgaria. It also developed partnerships with other organisations involved in similar ministry. From www.saltminetrust.org.uk

Submitted by Ruth Hughes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ She had encountered Jesus !! Affected by leprosy everything that she had once was gone, and this shell of a woman was left where one of the nurses had thoughtfully propped her, leaning against the green cement wall in the afternoon sun to soak up a little warmth. Not that she could properly feel it, insensitive as she was to almost every stimulus. Her life was almost senseless, literally without senses, blind and robbed of taste and touch. As usual, while drawing near, I tried to guess her age, probably 50 or 60, although she looked much older. I didn't know her given name. I called her Aamaa-mother. It was purely a recognition that she was older than me, and in Nepali society age and experience are things worthy of respect. She had no children of her own, so I hope she appreciated my giving her that honorary status. I would approach and squat next to Aamaa. She would here me arrive, and although she had no idea what I looked like, she would know me by my accent and my schoolboy Nepali that I was the foreign missionary boss. We would talk a little, about nothing much-how she was feeling (fine), what she had eaten (rice), and other small talk. And then, before I left and went back to my work, we would pray together. She would always ask if we could pray, and when we did she would always insist on praying for me. Brought up a Hindu, dragged down to nothing by a disease, she had encountered Jesus in the missionary hospital while being treated by the Christian nurses. It was her Saviour who lifted her from the depths to give her a life and, astonishingly, a gratitude for all she had received in Christ. Incredibly, she frequently thanked God for his gift of leprosy, because she felt that without it she would probably never have met him. As she prayed she reached out from the permanent night of her existence and helped me to lift my eyes from the froth of my problems to the towering substance of her faith. I almost always went to her when burdened, and I always walked back to my office able to see once again those dazzling peaks, able to praise God, grateful for my Aamaa. I knew and she knew that leprosy had made her the least that a human being could be. But in the spiritual dimension, of which Nepalese are naturally so much more aware than us Westerners, I believe she towers like a giant. I believe that in heaven she has escaped the darkness. She never failed to remind me that I walk in the light. Thank you, Father. Thank you, Aamaa.. Brad Lincoln - part of article in `Quiet Spaces' - a brf publication | Walk in the light: and you shall own your darkness passed away, because that Light has on you shone, in which is perfect day.
Walk in the light: and even the tomb no fearful shade shall wear; glory shall chase away its gloom, for Christ has conquered there.
Walk in the light: and yours shall be a path, though thorny, bright; for God, by grace, shall dwell in you, and God Himself is Light.
